BadBadNotGood play Empire Garage on Wednesday, March 18 from 11:45PM - 12:10AM, Monster Energy Outbreak House on Friday, March 20 and Bungalow on Saturday, March 21.
It’s a Thursday night, and Toronto’s Opera House is filled to the brim with a veritable buffet for people-watching—teenage hypebeasts, old dudes with fancy haircuts, drunk girls yelling into their phones, and muscular bros who look like they took a wrong turn on the way to their crossfit gym are all standing shoulder to shoulder, bobbing their heads in synchronization to the nondescript beats pumping out of the PA. Based on this diverse and eager audience alone, you’d never know that an improvisational, instrumental jazz trio is about to hop on stage and fuse Coltrane with Ghostdini. This assemblage of onlookers is about to pay witness to the most monumental flex ever orchestrated involving a saxophone.
Backstage, Toronto’s BadBadNotGood are getting ready to bless a capacity crowd with their signature punk-rock approach to free-jazz—as per usual—but based on the energy in the room, you can tell there’s something special about this evening’s performance. Tonight, pianist Matt Tavares, drummer Alex Sowinkski, bassist Chester Hansen, and guest saxophonist Leland Whitty will be joined on stage by legendary Staten Island rapper and Wu-Tang affiliate Ghostface Killah, as a celebration of their brand new collaborative album Sour Soul.
